The "Sapphire Sandwich" nickname comes from what makes this Speedmaster variant special: sapphire crystal on both sides. You get a scratch-resistant front crystal and a display caseback showing off the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 3861 movement. This updated caliber replaced the legendary 1861 in 2021, bringing modern METAS certification while maintaining the Moonwatch's heritage. The movement is now antimagnetic to 15,000 gauss and carries a 50-hour power reserve.
The Speedmaster Professional remains the only watch flight-qualified by NASA for all manned missions and the first watch worn on the moon during Apollo 11.
